The 2021 Hindman Dulcimer Homecoming is dedicated to the memory of Jon Pickow & Mike Slone.

The Hindman Dulcimer Homecoming is a celebration of the cultural legacy of Knott County, Kentucky, more specifically the advent of the mountain dulcimer as we know it by James Edward (Uncle Ed) Thomas around 1871. Born in 1850, Uncle Ed created more than 1300 of these delicate, angelic-sounding instruments before his death in 1933.

Thanks to Jethro Amburgey and others, generations of area students have made these dulcimers while attending Alice Lloyd College or the Hindman Settlement School. Now they are being built and played in Hindman once again!

In 2014 and 2015, with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, we were able to bring in people from all around the country to celebrate Hindman history of not only dulcimer, but of traditional music.

This year, thanks to the generous support of the Berea College Appalachian Fund, we’re back! The 2021 festival will consist of a three day hybrid gathering/virtual festival broadcast via ZOOM from the grounds of the Appalachian Artisan Center, the Appalachian School of Luthiery, The Hindman Settlement School, the Museum of the Mountain Dulcimer and the Troublesome Creek Stringed Instrument Company.

Join us April 8th, 9th, and 10th!
